October 20, 2020: In October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) recognizes working people with disabilities and reminds employers to include and increase access and opportunity to Americans with disabilities.  This year is the nation’s 75^th observance of NDEAM in addition, commemorating the 30^th anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

During NDEAM, Special Kids Special Families (SKSF) would like to highlight Logan Kelso. SKSF has watched Logan grow from a boy into a young man, first meeting him at Zach’s Place when the center was located in downtown Colorado Springs and Logan was in elementary school. Logan has transitioned into attending SKSF’s Adult Day programs and enjoys his time doing activities at the Joey’s Place center and out in the community.  SKSF Adult Day Habilitation Programs use mentorship, flexibility, understanding of family and home care provider concerns, and incorporate the individual’s goals, interests, and skills to promote clients to live full independent and productive lives.

Logan recently started training for a part time position at a local Colorado Springs Walmart. With the recent popularity of online ordering, working as a Personal Shopper is offering a fun new job for many, including those with disabilities. Logan is an adult with Autism who will be supported on-site with a Job Coach provided through Colorado’s Department of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Logan has worked diligently in clinical and behavior therapy to develop coping skills he needs to meet his goals. This May, he graduated with the class of 2020 from Coronado High School and his friends and family are so proud to see him succeed! His relationship continues to evolve with SKSF as he grows into a fine young adult.  “It’s exciting to see Logan’s hard work paying off in big ways,” says Mom, Sarah Kelso. “Maybe you’ll find him at the Woodmen & Powers Walmart when you are out grabbing your own essentials. Be sure to say hello!”

Special Kids Special Families is a non-profit umbrella organization with several unique programs designed to support people with disabilities of all ages from early childhood through adult as well as their families and caregivers including:

• Child & Family Services which encompasses Zach’s Place child/respite care center;
• Adult Services offering day programs and Host Home opportunities for adults;
• Child Placement Agency for foster and adoption placement for children with disabilities and special needs; and
• Behavioral Health Services offering mental health counseling and specialized therapy for individuals ages 4 through adult.
